Law Schools in Alaska

Alaska is currently the only U.S. state without an ABA-approved law school. However, residents can still become attorneys through tuition exchange programs, hybrid satellite hubs, or by "reading the law" via apprenticeship.

Does Alaska have a law school?

Currently, there are no ABA-approved law schools located within the state of Alaska. However, this does not mean you cannot become a lawyer while living there or that you must pay full out-of-state tuition elsewhere. Alaska residents have access to specific educational agreements and alternative legal training methods found in few other states.

Pathway 1
The WICHE Professional Student Exchange Program (PSEP)

Because Alaska lacks a law school, the state participates in the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE).

How it works:

Alaska residents can attend participating law schools in other Western states and pay significantly reduced tuition—often equivalent to in-state rates.

Participating Schools:

University of Washington, University of Oregon, University of Arizona, and more.

Pathway 2
The "Law Clerk" Program (Reading the Law)

Alaska is one of only four states that allows you to take the Bar Exam without a law degree through "Reading the Law."

The Process:

Study under direct supervision of a practicing attorney or judge in Alaska for 3-4 years rather than attending law school.

The Benefit:

Creates a debt-free path to a legal career, though pass rates are generally lower than law school graduates.

Pathway 3
Hybrid & Online JD Programs

For students who wish to remain in Alaska while earning an ABA-approved degree.

How it works:

Many top-tier law schools offer Hybrid JD programs requiring only limited on-campus residency.

The Benefit:

Complete most coursework online from Alaska with minimal travel requirements.
